Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
A fresh controversy has erupted in West Bengal after BJP MLA Amarnath Sakha from Bankura district's Onda constituency made derogatory remarks about Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. In a video shared by the Trinamool Congress (TMC), Sakha is heard stating, "We are fixing Mamata Banerjee's rate. Her rate is Rs 25 lakh. Catch hold of a molla and get out of the state. We shall pay you Rs 25 lakh."
Sakha's comments have drawn widespread criticism, particularly from the TMC, which has condemned the remarks as "deep-seated, rampant sexism." The BJP MLA's controversial statement comes amidst ongoing tensions over the state's handling of women's security, following the recent rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The state government announced compensation for the victim's family, a move that Sakha appeared to mock with his remarks.
The TMC has responded strongly, accusing the BJP of lacking respect for women and pointing out that this is not the first time such comments have been made by BJP leaders. The party cited a similar instance involving former Calcutta High Court judge and now BJP leader Abhijit Gangopadhyay, who allegedly questioned Mamata Banerjee's "price" in a previous remark.
Earlier in the week, Sakha also criticized the TMC and Bengal Police over the RG Kar case, suggesting that the Trinamool Congress was collaborating with the police in "anti-social activities." His remarks have fueled further tension, with concerns about the implications for law enforcement in the state.
